Bass Fishing at Lake Mateos Bass Lodge
How Not To Get To Lake Mateos Bass Lodge
written by J.C. Galloway |
| First, let’s talk about how not to get to Lake Mateos Bass Lodge and that would be by car. We do not recommend for our guests to drive into Mexico by car due to the long distance the lodge is from the border and due to the unrest in the areas associated with border crossings.
Our recommendation is that you travel by air. From wherever you are coming from in the US, Canada, Japan or wherever you can usually get a good flight into Mexico City or Guadalajara and from there onto Culiacan (CUL). All three airports are international airports and if your group is 15 to 20 people you can also check into flying to Mazatlan or Los Mochas. There is an air conditioned bus we can charter to bring you directly to the Lodge. Cost for this service is about $1,600.00 round trip. If you can save $200 + per ticket then it is worth the extra two hour ride. The ride from Culiacan International Airport to the Lodge is just short of an hour and is included in your trip package, ground transportation from other locations is not.
All the Mexican airlines offer great service and run very close to their scheduled times. We do recommend if possible to use the same carrier into and out of Mexico City because this avoids having to change terminals or pick up your luggage as it can be checked through to Culiacan. Customs in Mexico City takes 20 to 40 minutes and Customs in Culiacan takes 5 to 10 minutes, so it is worthwhile to check your luggage through to Culiacan. However, if you book a flight with an overnight layover in Mexico City you will have to pick up your luggage. Should you choose a flight with a long layover in Mexico City, the airport has several nice hotels at the airport. Sometimes the savings will more than pay for the room and makes for a nice relaxed travel experience. This is especially true as room prices drop during slow travel times. Mexico City Airport is well organized and fully modern. You’ll find everything you normally find at any large American airport. Sometimes, you’ll find a direct flight from the United States to Culiacan but these are very hard to find.
Before booking your flight, first confirm your Lodge reservation. Second, if you want to use your Travel Agent, then do so. I have personally found this to be more expensive than booking my own reservation. It is easier to use an agent because they do all the work. If you choose to do the work yourself it is not too hard, I make all of my own reservations and here is how I go about it.
1. I select my dates.
2. I decide what I think to be a fair price. For me, from Orlando, FL to Culiacan my ticket usually runs me $600 to $800 taxes and fees included. If I find flights in the $600 range I usually book it right then so I don’t lose the price or find the next time I come back to the same site, the price has increased or the flight is now sold out.
3. I usually look at 6 to 8 on-line booking sites. The prices vary greatly. I also pay close attention to total trip time and layover times so I can make the best use of my time. Some of my favorite booking sites are: cheapoair.com; orbitz.com; or priceline.com
I always leave early in the day whenever possible. I like to get to the airport before it gets crowded both coming and going. I do not recommend bidding on a ticket on priceline.com You can wind up with a very, very long flight and once you’ve bid and get the bid you are stuck.
Last, I always purchase trip insurance. Because I travel so frequently I have an annual policy that covers all of my travel. We also sell trip insurance from our office and Teri can assist you with this purchase.
Coming to Lake Mateos Bass Lodge is indeed a “Fishing Adventure of a Lifetime.” Planning your travel is part of the adventure and we are eager to help in any way we can. If you are coming and bringing your family, include them in the planning it will make it all the more exciting. When Lynn (my wife) and I plan a cruise we do it together. This helps us both get more excited about the cruise and builds our anticipation of the good trip to come. If she left me out of that part I would be missing out on an important part of our adventure together.
I hope this helps you in planning your trip to Lake Mateos and we look forward to having you as our very special guest this year.
