We are having a great season at Lake Mateos Bass Lodge. Our guest are  having a ball. Catches ran from 50 to 150 bass per day. With 10 pounders already being caught.

The best bait continue to be, poppers, zaraspooks, and buzz baits in the morning and evening.

Mid day Lipples crankbaits and spinner baits in chartreuse and white, and of course

ratle traps.
Weather conditions
Mild and warm 80f in the day. 60s at night.
Water level is 56%
The Bass are starting to move on bed and will continue spawning for 3 to 4 months.

In February the trees are all brown but the birds will fill the lake with color and grace. If you want to catch fish and see thousands of birds plan to come around that time. It is awesome.

From Dan T. and son Jay a March 10 – 14, 2010 Fishing Report“My son Jay and I had 3 wonderful days of fishing.  We caught 340 bass and had continuous action each day.  I caught an 8 lb. 9 oz. bass which was the biggest in our group that week.  We love to worm fish and had 3 full days of plastics.  We caught bass on top water, cranks, Rat-L-Traps, and spinner baits but 70 to 80% were caught on texas rigged Senkos.  Also  6 & 8 inch  and plain watermelon, watermelon with blue flakes, watermelon with red flakes worms.  Another boat caught approximately same number using a completely different pattern, a little “n” medium diver yellow and orange color thrown at 45 degree angle to the bank, crank 5 times and pause, then the bass would hammer it.  Spinner baits (chartreuse) with same color tail, slow rolled produced well for others.  There were 8 boats, smallest average daily catch 70 bass.  Pound for pound best fighting fish yet!  Bass holed up in brush tops off banks.  Thanks again for great memories.  We will be back!

Hey Senior J.C. I caught this for me! Come get yours!

Bennie sent this photo to  Mrs. Lynn and said  please senora let J.C. come down and help me get the camp open. Each year we work very hard to make improvements to the camp and I need J.C.. (PS send Money). Well enough of that. Mrs. Lynn is glad to get me out of her hair for a few days and besides that the truth is Benny wants to try redeeming himself after that whooping I put on him last year.  But regardless of who catches the most fish Benny is a great man and I always enjoy being with him as I know you will also when you come to camp. I always look forward to not only catching 100 Bass a day or more but also catching a larger Bass each trip.

Again this October Fish TV will be doing a show with us to broadcast this season. Last year we got into large schooling bass in 60 to 100 feet of water. The smallest fish we caught out of that school was 4 pounds. Most of them ran from 5 to 8 pounds With a 12 pounder being lost. I know it will be a great show so do not miss it. .

We had a good week at Lake Mateos bass Lodge opening the camp and getting started for the seasion. Fish TV was back with us again at Lake Mateos for another great show which will be on the outdoor channel in about 2 weeks.  Please plan to watch it as it wil show accross the US and Canada. Fishing did get offto a slow start but we did have many nice fish in the 10 to 9 pound class followed up by lot’s of 8 to- 6 pound fish. Many 4 and 5 pounders werealso  caught. However, two earth tremors and two passing cold fronts did slow the bite down. Nevertheless: everybody had a blast swaped fish stories, caught fish and gained wait, thanks to the good food. Hope to see you soon.  More pictures from other guest will be coming in shortly and we will send them on to you. some time next week.

Testimonial from
Terry Canterbury, Travel Writer
“This was a trip of a lifetime bass fishing trip to Mexico.  I never in my life have caught so many big bass.  Even my wife Cathy caught two 6 pounders and boy was she excited.  A trip like this will spoil you, especially when you catch 80 to 100 bass a day that average between 4 to 7 pounds.  My biggest was 9.5 but there were some 14 pounders caught.  My friend, Colby Simms caught one at 10.5 pounds.  It was a great trip to Lake Mateos Bass Lodge.”

Fishing Report for September 27, 2010

Bennie sent this photo and this fishing report:
He had two great days of fishing at Lake Mateos. During one afternoon between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. caught 45 fish with watermelon lizard, top water, Rat-L-Trap baits.  Water level at 70% and rising.

What to Bring on Your Trip

What to Bring on Your Trip

        written by J.C. Galloway

What do I need to bring when I come to Lake Mateos Bass Lodge is a question asked by almost everyone.  Well, let’s start from major to minor.

1.  A reservation is required.  No one can just show up because we do not accept walk in guests.  Why?  Because we want to be able to meet and exceed your needs properly.  We also like to be prepared to deal with any special dietary issues including allergies as well as special medical needs.  Now you know why we ask these questions each and every time you visit.

2.  A passport is required.  This can take up to 8 weeks unless you pay extra to have it given a priority status.  You cannot send in the required information then decide to have it expedited.  You must ask for priority status at the beginning of the process.  So start early or bite the bullet and pay the extra fee if it is not worth the stress of not knowing if it will get to you in time.

3.  Bring personal hygiene items (razors optional) along with medicine.  The airlines likes medications in the proper prescription bottles.

4.  Bring reels in good working order with good line.  I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard fishermen say, “I wish I’d changed my line before I left.”  After that big one gets away no amount of praying, wishing or cussing will bring her back.  So, change your line at home.  We recommend braided line and my personal choice is 50# Stealth Braid by SpiderWire.

5.  What kind of lures do I bring?  Call Teri the week before you leave and she’ll be able to tell you what they’ve been hitting with.  Or, check the website for fishing report updates which includes what lures are hitting.  The website lists the most common productive lures, however, bring your favorite type as well.

6.  Clothing:  The weather at Lake Mateos will vary from 25 degress to 100 degrees depending upon the season.  On a typical Jan. – March day it can start out at 25 degrees and by 10:00 a.m. be 80 degrees.  So, bring a variety of clothing and layering works well.  Also, bring a rain coat or poncho, a hat and 2 pair of sunglasses are recommended.  Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen!

7.  Bring a camera in a waterproof bag along with extra batteries.  The scenery is breathtaking and you’ll see a lot of birds!  Do not pack your camera in your luggage, but pack in your carry-on.

8.  Bring a camera . . can’t reiterate this enough.  Of all of the big fish caught last season not one of the fisherman had a camera on his boat.

9.  Come expecting to have fun, good fellowship, great food and expect to catch a lot of fish.

10.   Leave the office behind.  Trust me it will be there when you return and if it isn’t your being there or worrying about it will not change a thing.  This is your trip and it is for you to enjoy.  Come and enjoy what God has made for us.  Relax, you deserve a break and you will feel better for it and your family will be glad you did.

 Fishing Report #2
Boy catches fish to feed entire  village (well maybe family)!  The above photos were taken on Bennie’s last weekend fishing trip.  He’s not giving us a report this week because the water’s rising so fast there wouldn’t be any sense to send him out.  Lake levels are rising . . currently at 49.5%.  Fishing will be great in October – have you reserved your space yet?

Travel Insurance

        written by J.C. Galloway

When I first heard of travel insurance my first thoughts were of all the things that could go wrong on the trip, hurricanes, natural disasters, distination closing, airline strike, and even getting hurt and not making the trip.  Slowly I realized there were a lot of things that could stop my trip before I even got going.  For example, I could get sick, hurt (broken ankle) or a pre-existing condition that suddenly flares up just before I leave on a trip.  Or, even someone in my immediate family could get sick with a life threatening illness or accident.  Or, my boss (my wife Lynn) could say you cannot take the time off, you have to work, the employee covering for you is sick and we need you.  These are things although not related to the specific trip could eliminate or shorten any vacation travel.  Other things that could interfere are lost luggage, cancelled flights or unexpected layovers. All of these things and more are known to happen but, they are all things that travel insurance can cover.

Think about it, most people plan to take a trip months in advance.  They save for it, and they dream about it.  Shouldn’t you spend the few extra dollars it costs to protect that trip against the unexpected?  Your wife may ask, what if you got hurt, how would I get you home?  Your answer should be, I’ve purchased travel insurance and it will take care of it, don’t worry.  Believe me this is important for your spouse and loved ones to know.

Yes, we sell travel insurance not only for our trips but for most any trip you and your family take.  Coverage is tailored to meet your needs.  Also keep in mind if travel insurance is purchased within 15 days of making your reservation many benefits are added or upgraded.  It’s your trip, the choice is yours.  Our company position is that we recommend it to all our customers and I do practice what I preach as I carry a 12 month policy that covers all my travel during any given year.  This protection is available to you.  If you buy it and don’t use it you’ve received peace of mind.  If you buy it and need it you’ll be very glad.  If you do not purchase and need it you might not be a very happy fisherman.  You decide what is best for you.

We want your trip to be a “Trip of a Lifetime!”  Call Teri at 866-668-2379 if you have questions or wish to purchase travel insurance for any of your trips.

How Not To Get To Lake Mateos Bass Lodge

written by J.C. Galloway

First, let’s talk about how not to get to Lake Mateos Bass Lodge and that would be by car.  We do not recommend for our guests to drive into Mexico by car due to the long distance the lodge is from the border and due to the unrest in the areas associated with border crossings.

Our recommendation is that you travel by air.  From wherever you are coming from in the US, Canada, Japan or wherever you can usually get a good flight into Mexico City or Guadalajara and from there onto Culiacan (CUL).  All three airports are international airports and if your group is 15 to 20 people you can also check into flying to Mazatlan or Los Mochas.  There is an air conditioned bus we can charter to bring you directly to the Lodge.  Cost for this service is about $1,600.00 round trip.  If you can save $200 + per ticket then it is worth the extra two hour ride.  The ride from Culiacan International Airport to the Lodge is just short of an hour and is included in your trip package, ground transportation from other locations is not.

All the Mexican airlines offer great service and run very close to their scheduled times.  We do recommend if possible to use the same carrier into and out of Mexico City because this avoids having to change terminals or pick up your luggage as it can be checked through to Culiacan.  Customs in Mexico City takes 20 to 40 minutes and Customs in Culiacan takes 5 to 10 minutes, so it is worthwhile to check your luggage through to Culiacan.  However, if you book a flight with an overnight layover in Mexico City you will have to pick up your luggage.  Should you choose a flight with a long layover in Mexico City, the airport has several nice hotels at the airport.  Sometimes the savings will more than pay for the room and makes for a nice relaxed travel experience.  This is especially true as room prices drop during slow travel times.  Mexico City Airport is well organized and fully modern.  You’ll find everything you normally find at any large American airport.  Sometimes, you’ll find a direct flight from the United States to Culiacan but these are very hard to find.

Before booking your flight, first confirm your Lodge reservation.  Second, if you want to use your Travel Agent, then do so.  I have personally found this to be more expensive than booking my own reservation.  It is easier to use an agent because they do all the work.  If you choose to do the work yourself it is not too hard, I make all of my own reservations and here is how I go about it.

1.  I select my dates.
2.  I decide what I think to be a fair price.  For me, from Orlando, FL to Culiacan my ticket usually runs me $600 to $800 taxes and fees included.  If I find flights in the $600 range I usually book it right then so I don’t lose the price or find the next time I come back to the same site, the price has increased or the flight is now sold out.
3.  I usually look at 6 to 8 on-line booking sites.  The prices vary greatly.  I also pay close attention to total trip time and layover times so I can make the best use of my time.  Some of my favorite booking sites are:  cheapoair.com; orbitz.com; or priceline.com

I always leave early in the day whenever possible.  I like to get to the airport before it gets crowded both coming and going.  I do not recommend bidding on a ticket on priceline.com  You can wind up with a very, very long flight and once you’ve bid and get the bid you are stuck.

Last, I always purchase trip insurance.  Because I travel so frequently I have an annual policy that covers all of my travel.  We also sell trip insurance from our office and Teri can assist you with this purchase.

Coming to Lake Mateos Bass Lodge is indeed a “Fishing Adventure of a Lifetime.”  Planning your travel is part of the adventure and we are eager to help in any way we can.  If you are coming and bringing your family, include them in the planning it will make it all the more exciting.  When Lynn (my wife) and I plan a cruise we do it together.  This helps us both get more excited about the cruise and builds our anticipation of the good trip to come.  If she left me out of that part I would be missing out on an important part of our adventure together.

I hope this helps you in planning your trip to Lake Mateos and we look forward to having you as our very special guest this year.
