Lake mateos Lake Report

As most of you know rain fall has been low in Mexico and South Texas this year. Because of this all the lakes are lower than normal. Lake Mateos however is a very large and deep lake giving it a definate advantage over other Mexican lakes that are not as deep or as large. However, lower water levels raise several questions. First; Is there plenty of structure to fish. At lake Mateos this is not an issue, we have alot of structure at all levels of the lake.

Second; How will low water levels affect the spawn. As you know a lower water level will mean a quicker drop in water temperature. Last year at this time lake Mateos was 89-90 degrees. This year it is 85-86 degrees. This is a strong indicator of  an earlier spawn than last year. Since the lake is smaller about 40,000 acres versus a full pool of 55,000. The spawning areas will be more concentrated.

Third; Will the fishing season be shorter. Yes if the water level drops too low the season may be shorter due to the difficulty of getting to and from the boats and the difficulty of getting the boats out of the lake at the end of the season.

Fourth; Will there be a fish kill. This is very possible especially in some of the lakes under 100  feet in depth at full pool unless the water department chooses not to draw the lake down for agriculture. Right now the hope is that they will do a good job in regulating the water and also that the rain in December will be above normal at Lake Mateos we do not anticipate a fish kill due to low water since this Lake has many places over 230 feet in depth.

If you have any question please give us a call.
We had some great fishermen and fisherwomen down in November. They had a great time with Leo, Ron and Benny They sent these pictures back for you to enjoy.

Fishing for the first part of November got off to a slow start. The fish were in deep water and have not started into the spawning areas as of yet. The food supply is abundant due to the bait fish being concentrated. We did get some rain near the middle of the month but rainfall is well below normal for all of Central Mexico into Texas.
